Particulars from the Department

            The Department of Zoology Cotton College is one of the enlightened departments .The Department has been catering the needs of academic community in the field of biological science. It has produced very many eminent personalities in different fields. It has a glorious history in the field of biological research since long with the work of research giant like that of late Dr. Kali Nath Sharmah. At present also the department has produced many scholars with research guide like Dr. I.K. Bhattacharyya (Who is also the Present Principal of Cotton College), Dr. N. Dutta , Dr. Rita Mahanta and Dr. B.K. Boruah. The department has research projects sponsored by University Grants Commission and they are presently investigated by Dr. Mamata Goswami and Dr. Arup Kumar Hazarika.

The Department of Zoology runs classes from Higher Secondary to Post Graduate level with fourteen numbers of experienced and qualified teachers headed by Dr. (Mrs) Subrata Sharma. Presently the department has stated a very innovative certificate course in Bioinformatics, which is coordinated by Dr. Rita Mahanta. . A certificate course on Bioinformatics as add-on course has already been introduced in the department of Zoology from this year .

The Department of Zoology has quite a few international linkages having Dr. Arup Kumar Hazarika who has been elected as the Executive member of the British Ecological Society, an apex Ecological body of the World. Another teacher of the department Dr. Karobi Saikia was awarded with Full Bright Scholarship ( Indo-American Environmental Leadership Programme) . Apart from that Dr. Subrata sharma and Dr. Naren Dutta of this department had undergone higher studies in Syria and that of Japan.


The teachers of the Department of Zoology have been attending conferences of both National and that of International Kind. Dr. Uma Dtta, Dr. Biva Devi, Dr. Rita Mahanta , Dr. Rezina Ahmed , Dr. Mamata Goswami etc. have attended several National and International seminars to prove their scientific pursuits. Dr. Arup Kumar Hazarika has attended International conferences in the University of Columbia ( U.S.A), University of San Francisco,(U.S.A) , University of York and University of Aberdeen in the U.K.

Dr. Ratul Rajkhowa and Dr. Rita Mahanta of this department have contributed immensely to the student world by writing several text books in Zoology. Dr. Subrata Sharma , the present Head of the Department, who is an women activist has contributed greatly to the society through the women’s forum.

One of the books of Dr. Arup Kumar Hazarika, a faculty member of this department has been accepted in the world library of Congress and then accepted in 13 numbers of Universities in the United Sates of America, including University of Chicago, University of Columbia and University of Washington.
The Department of Zoology has a non profit making Society –“ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF COTTON COLLEGE” ,which is engaged in several Social and scientific work of the state.


The Department of Zoology, Cotton College has been endowed with a very rich library with stock of books to cater the needs of the students, teachers, and the research scholars. The Library is well equipped and has sitting capacity of 25 students/scholars/ teachers.
 

            Apart from the above-mentioned books and journals, the department of Zoology also keeps subscribing different foreign and national journals to keep the scholars up to date with recent developments of science and technology.

            Thus, it is not surprising that the CPE programme of U.G.C. the department of Zoology has been assigned as one of the shining departments of Cotton College .
