Particulars from the Department


(i) General courses conducted with special paper:

(iii) On going research projects: 

An UGC sponsored minor Research Project in the topic “A Statistical study on health economy and effect of health information among the middle class families in rural and urban areas of Kamrup district” under Mr. Kamal Barman, S.G Lecturer as the Principal Investigator.


(iv) Awards / Honour received from any agency: 

1. Ms Sangeeta Barthakur and Ms. Bandana Sharma, Sr. Lecturers of the department have received the Doctoral Fellowships under the plan scheme ‘Awards and Fellowships for Outstanding and Meritorious Research Work in Statistics’ from the Ministry of Statistics and Progarmme Implementation, Central Statistical Organisation, Government of India, New Delhi for the periods 1st June 2004 to 19th Feb 2007 and 18th August 2003 to 17th August 2005 respectively for pursuing their doctoral research under the Gauhati University.

2. The Gauhati University has awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics to faculty member Geeta Dey for her thesis titled ‘Some Aspects of a class of Generalized Poisson Distribution and its Applications’ in July 2007.


(v) Innovative activities, if any: 

1. A proposal has been submitted for introduction of a certificate course in Actuarial Statistics.

2. Another proposal submitted for introduction of a certificate course in Statistical Methods and Computing has been sanctioned and is likely to begin shortly.

3. The students of TDC 3rd year and the PG 4th semester students are encouraged to do projects on various socio-economic problems of the society by making use of appropriate statistical techniques. In this process, their skills in survey work and statistical analysis are enhanced. The application of statistical software like SPSS is stressed upon.

4. Students of the department are required to present seminars regularly so as to improve their communicative and presentation skills and to have a better understanding of the subject. 

5. The department has established a society named ‘Cotton College Statistical Society’ in the year 1994 through which various departmental activities like maintenance of a library, a wall magazine etc. and organizing guest lectures for the benefit of the students as also social activities like organizing health camps, providing relief to victims of natural calamities etc. are conducted. The contributing members of the society are the teachers and students of the department.


(vi) Collaborative projects, if any: 

The department has received a grant for infrastructure and research development from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, under the programme FIST for the upgradation of the computer laboratory and library of the department in the year 2001. 

(vii) Significant achievement of the department, if any:

(a) Results: Over the years the students of the Department have shown commendable academic performance, which is reflected in their results at the graduation level as shown below:

1) In the year 2004, 11 (eleven) students out of 14 (fourteen) were placed in the Ist class securing the first six positions including the Best graduate in the Gauhati University.

2) In the year 2005, 9 (nine) students out of 12 (twelve) were placed in the Ist class securing some of the top positions. 

3) In the year 2006, 6 (six) students out of 9 (nine) were placed in the Ist class securing the top positions including the first.

4) In the year 2007, 5 (five) students out of 6 (six) were placed in the Ist class securing the top positions including the first three positions.


(b) Placement: Since the inception of campus recruitment in our college in 2004, the students of Statistics have fared commendably as shown below: 

1) In 2004, a student of the department secured the top position in the recruitment programme organized by the SBI.

2) In 2006, two students of the department got placement in the recruitment programme organized by the Cognizant Technological Solution, Kolkata.

3) In 2007, two students were recruited by the HDFC Bank and three more were given placement by TCS.


(viii) Research journals subscribed by the department: 

Sankhya, Biometrika, Journal of Royal Statistical Society, The Annals of Mathematical Statistics, Journal of Indian Statistical Association, Journal of American Statistical Association, Journal of Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics, Assam Statistical Review, Demography- India.

(viii) Consultancy services:

Most of the faculty members are engaged in rendering honorary consultation services to associations like the ICWAI, AIM, ICFAI, SBI, LICI, Oriental Insurance, Assam Sishu Kalyan Sadan etc. 

Help and guidance is also provided to the students of other disciplines like M.B.A, C.A, Medicine, Education, Psychology, Mathematics and Economics in various capacities. The details are given in section B.

(ix) Any other significant academic matters:

Most of the faculty members are engaged in active research and have several published papers to their credit. 

Ms. Bandana Sharma and Ms. Sangeeta Barthakur have submitted their theses for the Ph.D degree to the Gauhati University in January 2007 and February 2007 respectively. 

Mr. Kamal Barman, Ms. Ruma Talukdar and Ms. Monita Baruah have registered for the Ph.D course under the Gauhati University. Ms. Dulumoni Das is registered for the Ph.D course under the University of Delhi.

Mr. Indreswar Talukdar has authored two books on Statistics, which have been accepted as textbooks.

The faculty members regularly attend seminars, workshops and courses for academic enhancement. The faculty members also participate as resource persons and experts in various programmes.
