Particulars from the Department
The Department of Islamic Studies comprising of Arabic, Persian and Hindustani (Urdu) was introduced from the very inception of Cotton College in 1901 A. D. along with other subjects like English, Physics, Chemistry etc. which has been playing a key role in the expansion of higher education in the fields of Perso-Arabic literature in the North East in general and Assam in Particular. The Chief Commissioner of Assam formally declared the Cotton College open in a festive gathering on the 27th May, 1901 and the first admission took place on the 17th June, 1901 at Gauhati which is supposed to be the natural centre of Assam as well as North East and thus a new chapter was dawned in the History of Higher Education in Assam.
Later on in July, 1909, affiliation was accorded to Intermediate Examination in Arts stream in English, Vernacular (Assamese, Bengali, and Urdu), Logic, Physics, Mathematics, Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, Philosophy and History in Pass course. Affiliation was further extended to B. Sc. Examination in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in 1910-11.
Affiliation to Honours course in the above subjects was granted in 1924 and Persian Honours course was started from academic session 1925-26 and Honours course in Arabic was introduced in the 1966 and Post-Graduate classes were opened in Arabic and Persian in 1992.
At present, this Department of Islamic Studies is only comprised of Arabic and Persian subjects for Higher Secondary to P.G. level classes. Both the subjects are taught as general courses. The provision of Major and General Courses’ papers are available in both the subjects. No any special paper was introduced by G.U. for both the B.A. and P.G. level classes.
