II  ADD ON OR ANY OTHER CERTIFICATE/DIPLOMA COURSES  

i)          Diploma course in Functional English  to start from 2007.

The minimum qualification for this course is 10 +2.

Classes will be conducted after 3.00 pm

ii)         The Department would be engaged in the teaching of a Certificate/Diploma Course in Cultural Studies  in collaboration with the Department of Anthropology, Cotton College from the ensuing session.

iii)        The Department also proposes to engage itself in collaborative venture in Montessori Training with the Department of Education as the Nodal department

 

III    ONGOING MAJOR RESEARCH PROJECTS: None at the Moment  

IV     AWARDS/ HONOUR RECEIVED:

Prof  Navakanta Barua, former Head of the Department of English, Cotton College   holds the rare distinction of  being awarded the Padmabhusan by the Govt of India. He was also honoured with the Sahitya Akademi and the  Nehru awards.

Prof Adity Sharma, Dr Gautam Sarma and Dr Rakhee Kalita Moral received the Shakespeare Quater Centenary awards from the Gauhati University .

A recognition award by the Nehru Foundation, Delhi was conferred on Dr Abanti Barua, Dr Rakhee Kalita Moral and Dr Deetimali Barua Nath

Ms Merry Barua was awarded a Gold medal by the Gauhati University for securing the

First class first position in the MA Examination in English of GU.

Summer Institute of Linguistics, South Asia Group

 Intended to be part of a Career Guidance and Counselling activity conducted by the Gauhati University this two part lecture targeted students who were looking for careers relating to language development both at the community and academic levels. Lectures were interesting as multidisciplinary approaches in the PG courses are geared towards such specialisation   and development.

VI        COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS:

  • Shakespeare: From Screen to Stage    12-15June, 2000

Presented by the British Council in association with Dept of English, Cotton College

A four-day Shakespeare film retrospective accompanied by critical inputs from the British Council Resource persons, this event was widely attended by literature and film aficionados from the city, bringing alive some of the best works of the Bard to student and teacher alike.

The films presented and discussed were:

1.      Hamlet

2.      Much Ado About Nothing

3.      Richard III

4.      Twelfth Night

The screening and appreciation of the films was preceded by a special lecture on “ Shakespeare on Screen” delivered by Debanjan Chakrabarti, Assisstant Manager, English Studies, British Council, Kolkata.

 

  • USIS Fellow Visits Deptt of English.       6 Sept, 2002

Resource Person:     Ron Price

American poet Ron Price visited the Department of English and spoke at length on the experience of writing poetry from America . He read out a selection of his poems and explained the nature and themes of his verse. He poetry reading session was followed by an interaction in which faculty members, Pradip Acharya, Ranjit Choudhury, Geetam Sarma and Rakhee K Moral took part. Major issues that figured in the discussion included religion, landscape, American idiom and confessional poetry.

LANGUAGE LABORATORY

A language laboratory is being set up in the department in collaboration with the other language departments of the college.

 

VII     SIGNIFICANT ACHIVEMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT:  

ANANDESWAR SARMA MEMORIAL LECTURES

  instituted in 1987, has played host to several eminent scholars from across campuses of the country, who have delivered illuminating talks on a wide gamut of subjects and issues ranging from Indian aesthetics through Renaissance humanism to American culture. This proved to be an appropriate literary forum for the people of the region to establish contact with their counterparts from other universities and elicited a huge response in terms of introducing new ideas and approaches to literary studies. These lectures include :
