Cottonian Magazine

The "Cottonian" is the annual journal of the Cotton College family reflecting the experiences and aspirations of the Cottonians. It is edited, designed and managed by Cottonians and monitored by teachers they want to work with. It is inclusive, addresses many aspects of reality and seeks to promote a holistic awareness of life in our world. Beginning as "The Cotton College Magazine" in 1922-23 with Professor R. C. Goffin of the Department of English as the editor it became the "Cottonian" in 1933 with Suresh Chandra Rajkhowa and Raihan Shah as the first student editors. In 1933 the "Cottonian" had its first elected editor in Satish Chandra Kakati. It attains to its present self-possessed stature through the will and enthusiasm of a host of Cottonians and the affectionate concern of the people of Assam for this premier institute of higher education, which is the oldest in the region. After all, the Cotton College was established in the year 1901. This dream of the people of Assam became a reality through the dedicated endeavour of stalwarts like Manik Chandra Barua.

Frederick William Sudmersen was at the helm of affairs from 1901 to 1926 as the first Principal. Many who first broke into print in the "Cottonian" later became renowned litterateurs with Nation-wide following. They include Surya Kumar Bhuyan, Bani Kanta Kakati, Krishna Kanta Handique, Jatindra Nath Duara, Maheswar Neog, Birendra Kumar Bhattacharyya, Bhupen Hazarika, Sayed Abdul Malik, Bhabendra Nath Saikia, Mamoni Roisom Goswami and others. The "Cottonian" ably and proudly carries that legacy and continues to serve as a window to the world.
