Particulars of the Department


1.General courses taught 

B.Sc. (Major) and M.Sc in Chemistry courses of Gauhati University. The Department conducts. In addition, Chemistry is taught as a subsidiary subject in B.Sc. level.

2. Any other Course

The Department of Chemistry is recognized as a Research Laboratory by Gauhati University and offers Ph.D Programme. At present the Department has six Ph.D guides recognized by Gauhati University.

3. On going Major Research projects

One DST sponsored Research project titled “Chemical investigation of a few medicinal plants found in North East India with Anti fertility effect “ is going on the Department. The project is jointly supervised by Dr. Mausumi Ganguly , Dr. Nirada Devi and Dr. Rita Mahanta (Zoology) .

4. Awards / Honour received from any agency 

The Department received a grant of 25 lacs of rupees from DST under FIST programme in the year 2005 in recognition of its high research and teaching standard. Prof S.U. Choudhury of the Department received best paper award for his paper titled “Fabrication of Nanocomposites” presented in an International conference in Australia in 2006.

5.Innovative activities 

The department has a science park named The Faraday Bicentenary Science Park which is aimed to promote science and entrepreneurship activities of the region.The Department in collaboration with the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council has developed a Combined Soil and Water Testing kit which has been distributed and used throughout the country.

6. Collaborative projects.

The Department of Chemistry has been collaborating with ASTEC, Govt. of Assam. The development of the soil and water testing kit was a result oh collaboration.
7 Significant achievements of the Department

i) Three research scholars of the department have obtained their Ph.D degrees from Gauhati University and another has submitted the thesis.One research scholar is pursuing his research under the guidance of one of the Faculty members of the Department. 

ii) The department has a unique computer laboratory established with the financial support from the DST under FIST program. The laboratory has as many as sixteen computers, laser and deskjet printers, scanner and internet facilities.

iii) The Department also has a centralized Instrument room equipped with modern analytical instruments. There is one IR and one UV-Visible spectrophometer and one cyclic voltameter in the centralized instrument room.

9 Consultancy Services

The Chemical Society of the Department offers consultancy of water and soil testing. Dr. Archana Goswami and Dr. Prahas Ch. Sarma are the coordinators of the project.

10 Other significant academic matters

The Department publishes an annual Science Journal “Molecule” which contains the science articles on current issues, science fictions, quizzes etc. The departmental wall magazine 'Clarion' published half-yearly also gives the students and staff of the department a platform for shaping and voicing their academic and societal concern.
