Module for study of
Microorganisms has been developed by the Botanical
Hobby centre of Botany Deptt.
Cotton
College
` in collaboration with NCSTC, DST, Govt. of India,
New Delhi
and Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC).
Dr. R.N. Bhattacharya is the project Director.
The project associates are Dr. P. K. Baruah and
Dr. S. R. Patgiri.
VI.
Collaborative
project: -
i.
Dr. S.R. Patgiri and D.Bora of Botany
Deptt., Cotton College have composed a book on
medicinal plants of Guwahati Refinery titled “Vrikshya
Vaidyam” in collaboration with the authority of
the Guwahati Refinery. The book is a
compilation work of 80 medicinal plants with
scientific and common names, scientific descriptions,
their uses and coloured photographs. The book is
compiled and edited by D. Bora and Dr. S.R. Patgiri
and published by Guwahati Refinery. The main principle
behind the publication of the book is to make a
documentation of medicinally important plants in and
around the huge Guwahati Refinery Campus and to
generate awareness about medicinal plant diversity
among the common people in general and the employees
and workers of the refinery in particular.
VII.
Significant achievement of the
department: -
The Botanical Hobby Centre,
Cotton
College
has developed a low cost module to study
microorganisms at school level. The module includes a
kit bag, which contains a small low cost compound
microscope and some simple apparatuses for the study
of microorganisms; an activity manual, a CD for
demonstration of all experiments included in the
module and ten posters depicting various aspects of
microorganisms. The module has been designed and
developed by Dr. R.N. Bhattacharjee with the
assistance of Dr. P.K. Baruah and Dr. S.R. Patgiri of
Botany Department,
Cotton
College
. The scheme was catalysed and supported by the
Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India
and Assam Science Technology and Environment Council,
Assam
. The module has already been demonstrated in National
Science Teachers’ Conference held in
Mysore
in 2006 and at Dehradun in 2007. It was also been
demonstrated in National Children Science Congress,
2006 held at
Majhitar
,
Sikkim
. The DST, Govt. of India has already enlisted this
kit as one of the major achievements of the Department
and is taking necessary steps to popularise the
module.
