Department of Assamese: Cotton College 

Date of introduction of the subject: 1907 
Date of establishment of the Dept: 1943 

History of the Department: 

Assamese was first introduced as one of the Vernacular subjects that were attached with the Department of Sanskrit. In 1927, the first post of a full time teacher in Assamese was created and Uma Kanta Goswami was appointed in that post. Assamese as a second language subject at Degree level was introduced in 1939. Assamese as an independent Department was established with Dibakar Goswami being appointed as the first Head of the Department. The post- graduate course in Assamese was started in 1979.

Extension activities: 

In 1983 a Wall magazine was started by the Asamiya Alochona Chakra. The Magazine has been named as ‘Ritu –Rutu’. 

Number of National / State level Seminar / Symposium Workshop held in last 5 years: 

The Department of Assamese has been arranging a series of Memorial Lectures annually at the National level in memory of Dr. Hemanta Kumar Sarma, a renowned scholar and a professor of this department who passed away on January, 18, 1992. A total of 5(five) lectures in this series have been arranged till date.
